Breakthrough Ceramic Decoration of City Monuments
10/11/2008

Jettable technology and Negev Ceramics knowhow is behind the artistic and colorful decoration of a city square and a park commemorating historical events. The work involves printing of photographs, decoration art and text on numerous ceramic tiles.

The park is partially dedicated to the unique story of the Jewish community in Ethiopia with its specific historical origin, rituals, heritage and heroic immigration to Israel. The color images are printed on some 7000 ceramic tiles spread over 26 columns.

Children’s drawings printed onto porcelain complete the design of the park. The local Education Department was looking for a way of collecting children’s drawings of their family and preserving them for posterity. The public response was great and more than 12,000 color drawings have been collected from children aged 6 to 10. These drawings were scanned, the files corrected for size and color and printed on ceramics tiles.

The large number of unique tiles called for some original thinking in the design of the park, and the architect came up with the idea of creating a step, one tile high, winding over grassy hills and through all parts of the park.  It has a length of 2,200 meters, and the rest of the tiles will be arranged on walls and columns.  Images of the tiles will be placed on a website and the families can locate their child’s drawing and find it in the park.

The other project is decorating a central city square with the images and life story of the 5 founding fathers of the city. A stone column is dedicated to each founder, presenting his picture and life achievements printed on ceramic tiles.

These two ambitious projects take place in a suburb of Tel-Aviv, Israel. Inkjet printing on ceramic tiles was preferred by the local municipality due to the outdoor durability of ceramics coupled with the colorful images and cost effectiveness of the Jettable inkjet printers. Printing of some 20,000 unique tiles took just a few weeks and is a matter of simple operation of the printer, much like printing a document on a desktop printer.
